15 Jun SR 116 Bike Lane Feasibility and Design (City of Sebastopol)
W-Trans has provided bike facility design services to the City of Sebastopol and Caltrans for State Route 116 which is the “main street” running through the City. W-Trans completed bike lane striping plans as part of the Caltrans repavement project, which was implemented in September 2018. The bike facilities include striped buffered bike lanes, green high visibility markings through key points of conflict and geometric transitions on the State High-way that are consistent with NACTO design guidelines. High visibility uncontrolled crosswalk markings were also included in the design which will upgrade these crossings of the State Highway. W-Trans services began in 2011 when they completed the Bike Lane Feasibility Study for the City. The study established the “geometric plan” to implement the bike lanes on the City’s main arterial where road widening was considered infeasible. The plan used a combination of a number of strategies to create space for bike lanes including unused pavement re-allocation, reducing travel lane widths, eliminating unused street parking, and selected travel lane reduction where intersection capacity would not be reduced.
