18 Jul School Access Evaluation (City of Walnut Creek)
This focus of this project for the City of Walnut Creek was to evaluate multimodal access in and around 13 schools serving students residing within the City. Key project tasks included conducting meetings with City, school, and District staff and other concerned stakeholders to gather information; hosting walking audits with these stakeholders to observe circulation patterns before and after school; collecting data via drones to provide a more complete overview of circulation on school grounds; mapping pedestrian and bicycle facilities around each school to locate gaps in these networks; and identifying top recommendations for each school to improve multimodal access. Recommendations included items such as sidewalk gap closures, reconfiguring drop-off and pick-up lanes, adding crosswalks and bike lanes, and implementing travel demand management strategies such as organizing “walking school buses.”
