28 Nov Railroad Crossing Signal Design (County of Sonoma)
As SMART rail initial testing began, Sonoma County staff noticed that two rail crossing locations had peak hour queues that frequently extended over the SMART tracks. W-Trans was hired to evaluate the expected safety of the crossings in the Penngrove and Fulton communities, and concluded action would be required to avoid potential for vehicle-rail conflicts. The preferred option of a concentrated enforcement effort was not possible due to budget and personnel constraints, and the second option of a queue cutter beacon was selected. W-Trans prepared the design for the new signal, and timing sheets for the special beacon operations with input from McCain Traffic Supply. Construction was completed in summer 2017.
