Lick Mill-E. River Parkway Crosswalk Improvement Project (City of Santa Clara)

The City of Santa Clara wanted to upgrade a frequently-used crosswalk near a school, park, and residential neighborhood to improve pedestrian comfort and safety. The City determined a pedestrian hybrid beacon was the preferred improvement and hired W-Trans to prepare the design. The beacon will be installed to warn traffic on the major street, and during preliminary design W-Trans suggested adding bulb-outs on the adjacent crossing of the minor street; these were included in the construction documents. The notable design challenge was the large number of utilities in the sidewalk and limited options for placing signal poles. The design is complete, and the project started construction in August 2020.
