Complete Streets (see project samples)
One of our primary focuses is on balancing the need to provide traffic capacity with the desire of communities to create more livable streets and sustainable transportation systems.  This work can take the form of Complete Streets, Livable Streets, Context Sensitive Design, Sustainable Transportation, etc.  Some of the types of tasks included in this service area include:

• Geometric design for streetscape plans
• Road diets
• Public right-of-way design guidance for specific plans
• Downtown access, circulation and parking
• Incorporation of non-motorized modes
• Pavement reallocation assessments
• Arterial speed reduction and traffic calming
• Sidewalk widening/road narrowing
• Balancing vehicle performance and pedestrian friendly features
• Arterial gateway traffic design
• Community transportation plans
• Transitional traffic measures
• Street redesign to support and/or catalyze adjacent land use
• Traffic engineering for livable streets

Our approach on Complete Streets projects typically incorporates expertise from one or more of our other service areas.  We are always prepared to interface with the public and stakeholders to help refine our recommendations.  We are also comfortable interfacing with urban design professionals, landscape architects, economic consultants, and community organizations.

Traffic Impacts (see project samples)
We have authored traffic impact studies for a wide variety of land development projects located throughout Northern California, including a growing number of mixed-use and transit-oriented projects. Typically, these studies include an assessment of existing conditions, determination of project-generated traffic volumes, assessment of future traffic conditions and determination of impacts. We seek to recommend mitigation measures that benefit all transportation modes in order to meet performance standards, reduce conflicts, improve safety, address project access conditions, and/or create an appropriate internal circulation scheme.

Bicycles (see project samples)
W-Trans provides both planning and design services related to bicycle facilities, with and emphasis on strategies to reallocate existing space for the cyclist within transportation corridors, assessing potential conflicts with vehicular traffic, incorporating detection systems into traffic signals, and providing for safe crossings of arterial streets.

Pedestrians (see project samples)
One of the more significant pedestrian engineering design issues is the safety of the pedestrian while crossing the street. W-Trans has completed a wide array of analyses resulting in customized safety enhancements for pedestrian crossing locations and corridors. These designs have utilized a combination of traffic calming strategies, urban design elements, and traffic warning equipment commensurate with the context of the adjacent land use and street setting.

Traffic Engineering Design (see project samples)
W-Trans offers a full range of services related to design, operation and maintenance of various forms of traffic control devices. Our staff have experience in the following areas:

• New or modified traffic signal design
• Roadway signing and striping plans
• Traffic signal interconnection systems
• Pedestrian crossing warning light systems
• Railroad and emergency vehicle preemption
• Bicycle detection
• Safety lighting
• Communications systems
• Traffic signal maintenance programs, inventory and testing
• Training/assistance with signal timing parameters
• Signal efficiency analysis
• Development of traffic signal design standards

Roundabout Design (see project samples)
Through a wide array of design experience, W-Trans has established a strong expertise in roundabout design and analysis, highlighted by the following characteristics:

• State-of-the-practice knowledge and experience since 1998
• Holistic design philosophy that considers upstream and downstream operations, context of adjacent land uses, and a full range of drivers on the road
• Focus on integration of superior pedestrian and bicycle facilities into roundabout design
• Skill at accommodating large vehicles at roundabouts without compromising safety and speed moderation benefits
• Specialty in design services for both roundabouts and traffic signals, leading to an unbiased approach
• Experience with State Highway roundabout designs
• Repeated success in gaining roundabout approval through Caltrans Headquarters Division of Design
• Expertise in effective roundabout education and public outreach

Traffic Operation (see project samples)
W-Trans staff has performed literally hundreds of traffic operation studies, including both those that are based on additional demand associated with proposed development (also see Traffic Impacts) as well as specialized analyses conducted for intersections and corridors. We use the latest methodologies and most current software, and apply standards that are appropriate for the size and type of community. Our traffic operational studies can take many forms and address a wide variety of traffic engineering issues including:

• Intersection and corridor vehicle performance
• Traffic control warrants
• Intersection and corridor simulation
• Vehicle conflict reduction
• Intersection and corridor capacity analysis
• Access management
• Interchange operations
• Traffic signal interconnect and coordination
• Traffic operation review for environmental studies

Municipal Staff Services (see project samples)
W-Trans provides traffic engineering support services to municipalities either on an as-needed basis or through on-site staffing. These services have included a wide spectrum of traffic engineering tasks including speed surveys, warrant analyses, bike lane design, traffic calming design, traffic safety, neighborhood traffic, and response to citizen comments and requests. Transportation planning tasks have included completion of traffic studies, development review, development of Citywide traffic mitigations, assistance with the determination of traffic impact fees, grant applications and the development of street design guidelines.

Traffic Safety (see project samples)
Because we understand that safety must always be our top priority, W-Trans maintains an extensive collision database and includes collision analysis in nearly every project we undertake. We have prepared a number of studies that addressed specific safety issues, and we routinely evaluate safety concerns such as the need for turn pockets, adequacy of sight distance, and adequacy of pedestrian and bicycle facilities to ensure that proposed developments meet traffic safety standards. Other services offered include establishment of a traffic collision database system, identification of high collision locations and determination of potential measures to reduce collisions

Traffic Calming (see project samples)
W-Trans approaches neighborhood traffic management issues with a sensitivity toward the local citizens who are experiencing undesirable traffic speeds and volumes within their neighborhood. Drawing on a technical foundation to determine an appropriate course of action, W-Trans staff develops a set of recommendations which may include a combination of operational and/or physical measures such as modifications in street alignment, restrictions on vehicle movements, speed reduction measures, pedestrian safety techniques, and road narrowing, while considering the needs of emergency vehicles. (See Complete Streets for description of arterial traffic calming services.)

Transit (see project samples)
As a matter of course, W-Trans considers transit activity as part of traffic analyses. Buses typically need more space to travel and maneuver than passenger vehicles. Our services can focus on the geometric needs of the corridor in relation to transit services, as well specific design considerations at transit stops that can help to reduce transit vehicle delays and enhance pedestrian access. Our experience with facilities in and around rail corridors encompasses the areas surrounding rail stations where vehicle and pedestrian access and parking at the station interface with the local street system.

Parking (see project samples)
W-Trans provides traditional parking occupancy and demand studies, and is also well-versed in parking management strategies focused on maximizing parking usage while still encouraging travel by non-auto modes. We have experience in parking analyses within a variety of settings including:

• Transit-Oriented development areas
• Downtown environments
• Government complexes
• Educational campuses
• Mixed use developments
• Shared parking applications
