Willits - Safe Routes to School Plan

W-Trans analyzed transportation access conditions at seven schools in the City of Willits to develop a citywide Safe Routes to School Plan. Pedestrian and bicycle access routes to the schools were the chief engineering concern. Since the City is served by one school at each academic level, the plan covered routes throughout the entire city. This study involved the partnership and input of city officials, engineers and law enforcement officers, transit staff, and school officials, parents and students. The Safe Routes to School Plan includes detailed documentation of existing conditions and graphical presentations of the recommended crossing, walking and biking improvements, with the intent that it be used in prioritizing and implementing physical changes that are expected to increase student walking and bicycling activities in their daily school commutes. The plan also addressed Encouragement, Enforcement, and Evaluation, with activities recommended that the community could undertake in order to increase the frequency they would choose to walk and bike to school rather than drive.
