W-Trans teamed with RRM Design Group to prepare the Highway 20 Traffic Calming and Beautification Plan, completed in September 2005. Highway 20 is a major east-west connector running between the California North Coast and Central Valley regions along the north shore of Clear Lake, bisecting the small communities of Nice, Lucerne, and Clearlake Oaks. The intent of the Plan was to help the County implement "context-sensitive design" solutions including traffic calming features that help to slow traffic, improve safety, enhance pedestrian circulation, and create a more appropriate small-town street environment. The need to accommodate semi trucks on this important regional route was a key element in the design. The final plan includes features such as strategically-place landscaped medians, gateway treatments, roundabouts, pedestrian crossing enhancements, street lighting, and improved sidewalk facilities.
