Sebastopol – Bike Lane Feasibility Study
|
This citywide bicycle facilities study focused on 17 corridors identified by the community where the feasibility of adding bike lanes was uncertain road widening is considered infeasible. Nearly one-quarter of the corridors are one-way streets in the central business district operated by Caltrans. The evaluation included confirming design assumptions with local and state transportation specialists followed by development of bike facility alternatives. Such alternatives were necessary as due to geometric constraints adding bike lanes would necessitate reducing travel lane widths, decreasing the number of travel lanes, eliminating street parking, a combination of these scenarios, or installation of some bicycle facility other than bike lanes such as Shared Lane Markings or Class III Bikeways. The analysis included inventories of the existing conditions of all corridors, creating easy-to-understand summary graphics of the existing conditions and all feasible alternatives, public outreach, and two presentations to Sebastopol’s City Council. Conceptual striping plans were prepared based upon Caltrans’ standards for installation of bike lanes on state highways. The final recommendations included bike lanes on the length of State Route 116 through the City.
